History

Flotilla 22-2 was originally chartered in 1939 at the Maryland Yacht Club as Flotilla 1, one of the first in the country, active as a service flotilla even before the US Coast Guard Auxiliary was established. In 1960, the flotilla was re-chartered as Flotilla 17. It was based at that time at the Maryland Yacht Club. Because of the base location, only members of the yacht club could be members of the flotilla.

The first commodore was Ken Riggs, who served as both commodore for the flotilla and the yacht club. Under Commodore Riggs, the flotilla was fairly active, with 55 to 60 members, 17 operational facilities (mostly power boats), and much education work done.

Notables

Past National Commodore Gene Seibert was once a member of Flotilla 22-2 before he moved to Virginia.
